Co. B of the 1st Louisiana Special Battalion was under the command of Captian Alexander White. Co. B was famously known as the Tiger rifles which later lended its name to the rest of the Lousiana units. The battalion was organized in Camp Walker, New Orleans. Most of the men were warf rats, immigrants or prisoners. There was a large number of Irish immigrants amongst the ranks. The battalion was ordered to Virginia and on the way they encountered Union Forces at Seneca Falls, on the Potomac. That made them the first Louisiana Unit to become engaged in the war.
Becasue of their behavior, they earned a reputation for being one the most rowdy and hard to control bunches in the Confederacy. They often fought their comrades. Micheal O'Brien and Dennis Corcoran were executed for striking Col. Harry Hayes after they got into a fight with other soliders. Hayes tried to break it up but they turned on him as well. They became the first two casualties for the Tigers and the first men executed in the Army of Northern Virginia. Another one of their fatalities came after one of the soliders consumed to much alcohol and climbed on top of the train and was killed by a sign.
Major Wheat was the only man in the Army that had any control over them and after his death at the battle of Gaines Mills, June 27, 1862, the unit was disbanded and the men were spread out to other Confederate units.
